Euro 2002 Gliding Expedition

Friday 12th July 2002: St Johann in Tyrol

Home

A crystal clear morning at St Johann. The ASH was prepared for an early start.

The ASH (Robin and Adrian) climbs with the Duo (Ed and Barry) away from the local mountain.

Soon both gliders were established over the higher mountains to the East of St Johann.

The optimistic start was thwarted by a reluctance for the cloudbase to rise. Some spectacular views but limited to the local area around St Johann.

Roger took this picture of the Ochsenhorn from the LS4.

.

Dave in YM caught our 2 two seaters transiting from the Kitzbuhlerhorn to St Johann.

A hot start to the day but a sheet of mid level altocumulus appears and cuts off convection. A photosession is planned with a wing tip camera on the ASH but the anticipated high alpine views will not be possible and all gliders fly relatively locally, but are able to experience the intimidating rock faces of the Wilder Kaiser mountain range and the softer wooded slopes of the Kitzbuhler Horn. On the airfield, we find a familiar aircraft in the shape of Grob 109 G-WAVE, which regularly spends a lot of time in the Alps, this time in the care of longtime LGC member Godfrey Franzl who now lives in nearby Lofer.
